Coast Weeks Beach Relay Set for Saturday

The V.I. Pace Runners annual Coast Weeks Beach Relay begins Saturday at 7 a.m. The relay consists of teams of two runners, each runner runs one mile up Ha Penny Beach and one mile back.

There is no entry fee. Medals will be awarded to the top three teams and all participants will receive certificates. V.I. Pace Runners organizes the Beach Relay in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup week.

In the group’s first triathlon, the Wall-2-Wall, held Sunday under near-perfect racing conditions, 21 men, six women and eight relay teams competed. Three athletes also competed in the shorter distance Try-a-Tri race.

Dedrick Luikens was the 30-39 age group’s and overall individual winner with a time of 1:20:10, two minutes faster than his time last year.

Sissel Holloway, just days before heading off to Auckland, New Zealand, for the World’s Age Group Championship race, grabbed the gold for the women’s division with a time of 1:23:24.
