VIEDA’s Enterprise Zone Commission Hosts Estate Planning Conference

The Enterprise Zone Commission (EZC) will host an estate planning conference from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Windward Passage Hotel on St. Thomas.
The residents of the enterprise zones of Savanne, Downstreet, Garden Street and Upstreet on St. Thomas, and other interested persons, are invited to attend to gain knowledge and understanding about estate planning; learn about basic estate planning options, including whether to prepare a will or a trust; and learn about the probate process in the Virgin Islands.
“The deJongh / Francis Administration supports the VIEDA and the staff of the commission on their continued efforts to inform enterprise zone residents about the importance of estate planning and highlight the programs and services that are available at the Enterprise Zone Commission to assist them,” said Gov. John P. deJongh Jr.
Due to limited seating, pre-registration is encouraged. More specific information will be provided during breakout sessions on these topics: 1) What happens to my property if I don’t have a will or a trust ? 2) I have a will, but what’s a trust?, 3) One of the owners of a building is deceased, and the deceased owner did not have a will. What should I do? and 4) There is a will. How do I avoid a lengthy probate?
“I am delighted that this conference will be hosted once again by the VIEDA’s Enterprise Zone Commission. This conference is imperative for our enterprise zone residents, business owners and other members of our community,” said Percival E. Clouden, CEO of VIEDA.
The commission is one of five entities under the V.I. Economic Development Authority. It was created by V.I. legislation in 1999
to provide incentives and tax credits for individuals to do business and create jobs for residents in the designated enterprise zones of Savanne on St. Thomas, and Christiansted and Frederiksted on St. Croix. The EZC also helps residents refurbish their homes that are located within the enterprise zones. This program helps revitalize the economy and the physical appearance of blighted and severely distressed areas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
To register for this conference, contact Nadine Marchena Kean, the director of the Enterprise Zone Commission, at 774-8104 on St. Thomas.
