Hoyas, Guidance Get NBBA Weekend Wins

The Hoyas and Guidance were both winners in the New Breed Basketball Association summer league weekend action played Saturday night at the Ronald Charles Gymnasium on the Central High Campus. The defending champion Hoyas knocked off Dread I’s, 80-62, in game one, while Guidance pulled away late to beat the Lakers, 74-65, in the late game.

Hoyas 80, Dread I’s 62
The defending champion Hoyas, who had looked anything but for most of the season, are rounding into form as the season winds down. The Hoyas blew out the Dread I’s, 80-62, in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate.

The Hoyas hammered their opponents for three quarters, building a 23 point lead of 69-46 before calling off the dogs in the fourth.

Warren Christian led the way for the Hoyas scorching the nets for 21 points that included five bombs from beyond the arc. He also grabbed nine rebounds on the defensive end.

Also chipping in for the Hoyas were Omari Applewaite with 17 points and six dimes, Karl John with 17 points and Eddie Castillo with 13.

Kurt “Tennis Man” John controlled the paint for the Hoyas defensively swatting away five shots while grabbing a game-high 16 boards.

For Dread I’s it was Robby Sanes leading the way with a team-high 14 points. Timothy Sneed dropped in 12 points, Wilmont Liburd 11 and Kareem Harry finished with 10.

Guidance 74, Lakers 65
Guidance turned back a late charge by the Lakers in the fourth quarter of game two, then gradually pulled away to win by nine, 74-65.

Jerome Nathaniel took matters into his own hands on Saturday, exploding for a season high 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead Guidance to victory. He got good support from Raydell Dennis who chipped in with 11 points and 15 boards and M. Jacobs who netted 115.

The Lakers were led by Rashawn Williams who finished with 13 points and six assists, Robert Duck had 12 points and 15 rebounds, and Shane Hodge finished with 10 points.
