The Caribbean Tourism Organization in conjunction with Monroe College has scholarships available for Caribbean-based students who want to get degrees in tourism-related fields. The application deadline is Aug. 3.
Students must attend Monroe College at either its Monroe, N.Y., or St. Lucia campus to study full time for a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management or a master’s degree in tourism/hospitality management.
Tourism Department spokesman Allegra Kean Moorehead said that since tourism is the territory’s top industry, a degree is a big help.
“It is one of those industries where you can learn a lot on the job, but by getting a degree you might be able to start at a higher level,” she said.
Scholarship will range from $4,500 to $18,660 a year distributed over three semesters.
Scholarships are based on an overall assessment of the student’s academic performance, credentials and potential for success in collegiate studies. Students need a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher or a class rank in top 20 percent, two letters of recommendation, a strong record of leadership or community involvement, and a personal statement clearly articulating goals related to career advancement in the hospitality/tourism industry.
According to its website, the CTO envisions the global recognition of the Caribbean as a growing set of places and experiences that people feel compelled to enjoy in their lifetime. It is headquartered in Barbados.
