5-Year-Old Alerts Neighbors about Fire

Fire Service Assistant Director Daryl George praised a 5-year-old girl for alerting two elderly neighbors about a fire in Estate Thomas on Sunday, crediting the unnamed kindergartner with saving two lives.

Two units responded at 8:25 p.m. to reports of a structural fire with people trapped inside, Fire Service officials said in a statement. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found an apartment fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crew began their search and rescue. It was later reported that all of the occupants got out safely after the young girl alerted them of the fire.

In an earlier incident just before 1 p.m. Saturday, two units responded to a fire alarm in Estate Frydendahl and found a wooden structure engulfed with flames. Extra units were deployed and the fire was brought under control.

The Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit was called to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. No injuries were reported, but unfortunately, the owner’s dog died.

The investigation of the structural fire in Estate Thomas has been completed by the Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit. However, the fire in Frydendahl is still under active investigation, and the origin and cause has not yet been determined.
