The Lakers and Boys Dem pulled off stunning victories in Saturday’s New Breed Basketball Association League action at the Ronald Charles Gymnasium. A shorthanded Lakers shocked the one-loss Kings, 80-76, in the opening contest on Saturday, while a highly energized Boys Dem squad blew out the previously undefeated, league leading Dread I’s, 85-66, in a stunner.
Boys Dem 85, Dread I’s 66
The late game on Saturday was a highly anticipated contest between the undefeated Dread I’s and the one-loss Boys Dem. It was one of the must-see games that every fan highlighted on the league schedule.
However, a 24-12 run by Boys Dem in the second quarter proved to be the end of any notion of a close contest, and when Dread I’s high-scoring star forward, Cuthbert Victor, went down and out of the game in the third period the end results was a foregone conclusion.
It appeared the Victor was hurting from much earlier in the contest as the high-energy player had noticeably slowed down before leaving the game for good.
Not to take anything from the Boys Dem efforts, Victor may have just made the final gap a little bit less than the 19 points.
“My main strategy was to harass their guard and rebound the ball,” said an elated Zee Swanston, Boys Dem coach.
Terrell Christian had his usual strong game for the winning team, finishing with a game high 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He was well-supported by Amedius Deweer, whose 10 second-quarter points led his team’s game changing run. Deweer finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and a game-high six blocks. Rasheed Swanston also dropped in 11 points for the winners.
The Dread I’s had two players in double figures led by Andy Chelcher with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Victor also finished with 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds before leaving with the injury.
Lakers 80, Kings 76
In the biggest shocker of the night, the shorthanded Lakers pulled off a huge upset over the highly touted Kings, 80-76.
Playing without two starters for the second game in a row, the Lakers got a huge all-around game from point guard Rashawn Williams to help knock off the Kings. Williams finished the game with 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists to lead the Lakers to the upset victory.
Three other Lakers finished in double figures with Olani Vanterpool dropping in 16 points, Terrell Thomas netting 11 and Dennis Liburd dropping in 10.
Craig “Big Smooth” Williams led the Kings’ effort with a team high 29 points. Nybo Rogers netted 20, and Markie Perinon finished with 12.
