Adeenah Sulaiman died on June 10.
Adeenah Sulaimanwas born on the island of St. Thomas, USVI, on Sept. 21, 1966. At the tender age of three, Adeenah relocated to Brooklyn, New York, with her mother and family–where she was raised. Throughout her years of schooling, Adeenah always had a passion for art. She would spend her pass time drawing and painting beautiful pieces that were displayed in her room and throughout our home. Her ultimate goal; however, was to become a pediatrician.
After completing high school, she attended Kingsborough Community College where she remained for two years. Her time at college was cut short after Adeenah fell ill. At the age of 23, she returned to the Virgin Islands. Thereafter she stayed with her mother who became her caregiver and best friend.
Adeenah was quite a character. She had the ability to turn frowns into smiles with her (one of a kind) sense of humor. She loved her family and especially enjoyed holidays when we got together and reminisced on past memories. She also loved to dance and sing. Music was what kept her happy and kept her company. Her radio stayed on 24 hours a day. When her television was on, sounds of her favorite artist would fill the room: Janet Jackson, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, Sade and Madonna.
We remember Adeenah as always being an intelligent, free-spirited, and very funny person. In addition, one of her best attributes was being an excellent listener.
Though Adeenah is gone, we know that she will live on through the smiles and the fond memories that she created. We will miss and always love Adeenah.
She is survived by her mother, Neamah F. Fils; sisters: Willa Fils and Amanda Henri; brother, Andre’ Henri; nephews: K’dahl Wilson and Chikai Pogson; niece, Avita Cole; aunts: Lucia, Violet, Cecile, Jenita, Sylvanita and Margarita; uncles: Lucien, Bernard Recaldo, Winston, Glaston, Liston Sr., and Clinton; great aunt, Olivia Carty; and special cousin, Dr. Aya Assebian; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at St. Paul Baptiste Church.
