Alejandro Velasquez, 34, was arrested about 2:45 a.m. Monday at his Estate Constitution Hill home on assault charges, the Police Department indicated in a press release issued Monday.
Police went looking for Velasquez following a shooting that injured two males in the vicinity of the Water Gut shanty in Christiansted. The two men, ages 34 and 29, were struck by gunfire. Police arrested the suspect less than two hours after the shooting.
According to the report, at about 1 a.m. police were dispatched to a shooting. They found one of the victims shot in at least three places in his lower back, his hips and buttocks.
Witnesses in the area told police that a man approached the victim holding a black handgun and began to fire it toward the victim, who turned and attempted to flee. He was taken by ambulance to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.
A second man was also shot in his hand during the incident. Police encountered that victim walking on King Street. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Velasquez was held on a $75,000 bail and remanded to the custody of the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
