Student Competition Promotes Role Swap with UVI President

UVI’s President for a Day Competition will give two UVI students, (one on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix), an opportunity to trade places with UVI President Dr. David Hall. It’s the first time that the President for a Day Competition will take place at UVI. During the fall 2012 semester, President Hall will swap roles with one UVI undergraduate student on St. Thomas. He’ll swap roles with one undergraduate student on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix during the spring 2013 semester.
“I’d really like to know more about what it’s like to be a UVI student,” President Hall said. “I hear from students all the time, but this unique program should make each of us aware of the challenges and opportunities that exist in the other person’s role. Hopefully, it will increase our understanding and sensitivity going forward.”
Each student will follow President Hall’s normal schedule, while President Hall will attend classes and events in place of the student. In this way, President Hall will get to know what it’s really like to be a UVI student, while the students will gain first-hand insight into running the university.
Over the course of three days, the winning students will shadow President Hall to observe and learn the role of a university president, assume the role of president while President Hall participates in the student’s full schedule, and President Hall and the student will provide public presentations on what they learned from the exercise.
How to Apply
All UVI undergraduate students with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 are eligible to apply. Interested students must submit an application, resume, biography and answers to the following questions:
1. Why should UVI select you to be President for a Day?
2. If you were hired as the new UVI President, what is the first issue you would address? Why?
3. One of the most important aspects of being president of a university is leadership. Please explain what you feel are the characteristics of a good leader.
4. How would you market UVI to other communities?
A nominating committee made up of UVI faculty, staff and student representatives will consider the applications. Applications are available from the Student Life section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu – and from this direct link. Students can also insert the search term, “President for A Day” on any UVI Web site page or click on this direct link.
Application Deadlines: The deadline for St. Thomas students to apply is Sept. 12, 2012. On St. Croix, the deadline for applications is Feb. 7, 2013. For more information please contact Astrid Carmora at 693-1047or send e-mail to president_for_a_day@myuvi.net.
