Wilfred Christopher Finch Dies at 93

Wilfred Christopher Finch celebrated his birthday on two days — the date "my mother said I was born," May 24, 1918, and the date on his official birth certificate, May 25, 1917 in Christiansted, St. Croix. He was the sixth child of Emmeline Irving Finch and Alexander Finch. His siblings were sisters: Rose, Beryl, Elaine, Ena and brothers: Hilvan, Ira and Earl.

He and Beryl Esther Bough were married in 1940 and had four children: Judge Raymond L. Finch, senior sitting judge of the Federal District Court; Gordon A. Finch, former director of the Virgin Islands Port Authority and former commissioner of the Department of Public Works; J’ada M. Finch-Sheen Esq., former attorney general of the Virgin Islands; and Dorrette Carter, retired director for the Office of Scientific Information for the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. They were blessed with ten grandchildren: Faye Allison Finch, Jennifer Finch Jenkins, Mark Finch, Nataki Finch Richards, Albert Sheen Jr., Nicole Sheen McCollom, Adrienne Finch-Sheen, Jared Finch-Sheen, Richelle Worrell Robinson, and Jason Worrell and 10 great grandchildren.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, playing baseball and cricket, boating and fishing. His real avocation was music. He played with many bands in the territory, including his own band and later with the LaMotta Brothers and Vibratones Bands.
He died peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Estate Solitude, hours before his 94th birthday. The Celebration of his Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. on June 2, at the Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church, Christiansted with viewing beginning at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at Christiansted Cemetery.
