Gifft Hill School has announced that Dr. Franklin Chang-Dìaz, acclaimed NASA astronaut, will be the featured speaker at the graduation ceremony of the class of 2012 at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday June 14. Chang-Dìaz is the recipient of seven (7) NASA space flight medals, three (3) NASA Exceptional Service Medals, the Liberty Medal from President Reagan and the Medal of Excellence from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, among many other accolades.
He is the veteran of seven space flights and the inventor of the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket as well as the president and CEO of Ad Astra Rocket Company. He is also an adjunct professor of physics at Rice University and the University of Houston, and has presented numerous papers at technical conferences and in scientific journals. Chang-Dìaz was inducted into the United States Astronauts Hall of Fame on May 5, 2012. He is the father of J. Elizabeth Kinsella, Gifft Hill School’s 2012-2013 upper school dean.
Gifft Hill School is the only preschool through high school program on St. John, currently serving over 160 students. Eleven students will be graduating with the Class of 2012.
