Former V.I. Police officer James Charles, who recently resigned from the department after 15 years of employment, died Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Acting Police Commissioner Henry W. White Jr.
Charles, 40, was hired by the VIPD as a police officer in August 1996, and resigned his position on Dec. 20, citing personal reasons. Police are still awaiting the final autopsy report to confirm the cause of death.
“On behalf of Assistant Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman, St. Croix Police Chief Christopher Howell, and the entire VIPD, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, who are dealing with this tragedy in this holiday time when family togetherness is emphasized. At this time it is imperative that we rely on the support of friends, family, and our faith to see us through all difficulties,” White said.
