CMCArts Exhibits ‘The Palletteers Paint St. Croix’ Through Jan. 8

“Off Season at the Waterfront” by Mary Pickett painted at the Frederiksted Pier
The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts opens “The Palletteers Paint St.Croix” with nine artists exhibiting. The reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, in the downstairs exhibit. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available, and admission is free. The exhibit will be displayed through Jan. 8 and is funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.
Begun in the early 90’s, the Palletteers has been a loosely organized group of people who like to paint. They get together year round, once a week at a different venue and paint on location for three hours. Some of them are beginners; some are professionals; and the rest are somewhere in between. Anyone who wants to paint with them can just show up. En plein air is French for “in the outdoors,” which is where the Palletteers usually paint. Ideally, the artist will finish a plein air painting on site. In this show gallery goers will see many examples of both plein air work and studio work.
The show includes the paintings of nine different artists. Ginger Anderson is both exhibitor and the coordinator of the exhibit. She has explored drawing, watercolor, acrylic, clay, stained glass, and many crafts before arriving at the medium of her choice, oil. In her free time she manages the Palletteers’ weekly painting site as well as their blog (http://palletteersofstcroix.blogspot.com).
Sondra Catts, who is one of the group’s founders, has been painting in watercolor for 50 years. She has shown and sold her work in numerous shows including the Good Hope School’s Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit and the Botanical Garden’s Art in the Garden. She has also had her pieces in the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts’ Island Art & Soul calendar.
Susan Filene is an avid watercolorist who has recently become skilled in oils. Her artwork has appeared in several shows and can be found at Many Hands in Christiansted.
Mary Pickett has been making artwork for many years. Most recently, she returned to her love for watercolor painting and began studying with St. Croix local artist Jane Akin. In her watercolors, she captures moments from daily living, where she often finds quiet moments tucked into the active lives of people, animals and the environment. Carolyn’s art can be found in collections on St. Croix, in the states, and internationally.
Elizabeth Keith describes herself as an aging multi-medium artist and an underwater photographer. Although she primarily paints in watercolors, she has recently dabbled in acrylics and apprenticed herself to some experienced mural painters, so she can learn the art of painting murals. Her latest efforts can be seen in Frederiksted at St. Patrick’s School and Bernie’s.
Marilyn Phillips May paints by commission, by inspiration, for the love of painting, and for humanitarian purposes, raining awareness of critical life issues in countries across the globe as a missionary volunteer and utilizing her talents in Kenya, Mexico, and Honduras for the past 11 years.
Bethany Kennedy has already shown her artwork in several venues and works primarily in oils. Bethany views painting with the Palletteers as a great motivation to get out there and paint. The gorgeous scenery on the island of St. Croix rarely fails to inspire her. She has found that she has especially enjoyed painting the beautiful beaches.
For co-founder of the Palletteers Emy Thomas, painting has been one of her greatest pleasures since moving to St. Croix in 1986. For years she concentrated on watercolors, then switched to water-soluble oils a couple of years ago and feels she has found her medium.
Applications for both Palletteer participation information and memberships for The Caribbean Museum Center will be available at the exhibit. The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is located on the waterfront at 10 Strand Street in Frederiksted. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays through Saturdays, as well as all cruise ship days. In the upstairs gallery the installation of Tony Vanderperk mural paintings 2001-2011 will open on Nov. 4. Call the museum at 772-2622 for additional information.
