If you’re the owner of a boat named Fishtail, the Planning and Natural Resources Department would like to talk to you. The boat, about 25 feet long with twin 200-horsepower Yamaha engines, went on the reef at False Entrance on St. Thomas late last week.
Roberto Tapia, Planning’s assistant enforcement director, said a crew went out Friday to investigate after they got word the boat was on the reef, but conditions were too rough for a close evaluation. They did locate the boat and lifejackets strewn on the reef. Tapia said they found no bodies.
They went again Monday, but conditions are still too rough. However, they were able to determine the boat’s name. Tapia said his staff couldn’t find any identification or registration number. He said it was too rough to look for the engine’s serial number.
“You have to catch it on a calm day,” Tapia said.
Tapia said he suspects the boat overturned elsewhere and drifted to False Entrance because the hull has no damage. However, the top of the boat, which is upside down on the reef, is damaged.
There is also some damage to the reef, but Tapia said Planning’s Fish and Wildlife Division will investigate it.
