DOL Announces Summer Job Placements for Youth

The Department of Labor has successfully placed 340 youth participants into its Summer Employment Work Program territory-wide, according to a press release issued Monday by Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr. There are 202 participants who have been placed into employment programs on St. Croix, and 138 students placed in the St. Thomas/St. John district. Included in these totals are the 25 interns who were selected for participation in the Labor Investing for Tomorrow (LIFT) program. To date, a total of 133 public and private sector employers are participating in providing a gainful work experience for the youth of the territory through this DOL initiative.
Additionally, the Department of Labor’s Youth Council, in conjunction with the WIB (Workforce Investment Board), has announced the selection of providers for the Career Exploration and Life Skills component of its summer programs. These program activities will offer workplace orientation and career exploration to an additional 172 youth between the ages of 14-15. Requirements for and benefits to participants vary slightly for older youth.
Following are the selected providers participating in the 2011 DOL program. On St. Thomas: Work-Able Inc., Sisterhood Agenda, St. Thomas Livestock Association, Technology Center for the VI, Pistarckle Theater, and Estate Bovoni Weed and Seed Inc. On St. Croix: Inner Changes for Girls and Boys Council Inc., Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, Work-Able Inc., VIPD/Grove Place Weed and Seed, Penntium Electronics & Technical Training, Helping Children Work (HCW) Inc. and Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism Inc. On St. John: St. John Community Foundation and the Friends of the V.I. National Park.
During the past few months, the department has accepted over 1,254 applications and will continue to register interested individuals. However, it informs the general public that due to both federal and local funding shortfalls, the department will not be able to accommodate all registrants. Priority consideration is given to at-risk youth, out-of-school youth and youth who are pursuing post-secondary education. Individuals are also reminded that opportunities for a work experience position are tied to each customer’s career goals and service strategy plans. This service is available year round, especially for older youth who are now out of school and/or unemployed.
