Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted Features Marvlyn David and Friends

Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted will take place on Friday, May 20, the third Friday of the month. The monthly jazz concert takes place in the Buddhoe Park near the historic Fort Frederik in “Freedom City” Frederiksted. This month’s concert features the cool jazzy sounds of Marvlyn David & Friends. Marsvlyn David is also a writer, arranger and producer, who has had four of his tunes recorded by the Howard University Jazz Band. He has written, produced and recorded numerous commercial jingles heard in the territory. He was the band director for Brenda Cole, 1988 country singer of the year. His other credits include being the musical director for Orquesta Taboga, Atlanta’s premier Latin band, and producing one of the group’s CD.
Olaf “Bronco” Hendricks grooves on his sax, making the instrument spring to life in any genre whether it is Latin, jazz, quelbe, soul or funk. He has been playing music since high school, and following that played in D.C. for more than 12 years. His soulful stirrings accompanied the John Hodge band, the Talent Club, Ronnie Benjamin, Melvin Petrus, The 5 Notes, Wedeyah, Otto James and Friends, and many other local groups. Most notably, Bronco blows sax with the world traveling Stanley and the 10 Sleepless Knights, the ambassadors of Crucian culture, playing native born music to audiences as far away as Denmark and Germany.
Claudette “Adjoa” Hinds cannot recall a time when music was not a significant thread in the fiber of her life, from singing three- four- and five-part harmonies with her mom and siblings to performing with Akwaaba, Billy Paul and Hugh Masakela. In 1992, she was invited to appear at the St. Croix "Jazz in Paradise" festival with the Yusef Saleem/Freeman Ledbetter Group. "I’m not given to vocal pyrotechnics, nor do I possess a once-in-a-lifetime instrument," she says with more humility than is warranted. "I simply sing and hope you will enjoy."
Judi Fricks is so excited to once again share the Sunset Jazz stage with some of her favorite St. Croix musicians. Raised in church by her missionary parents, Judi began singing at the ripe age of four. Today she stays busy running her own property management company and working as a volunteer for Crime Stoppers USVI.
Sunset Jazz is a free concert presented by the Frederiksted Economic Development Association. The beautiful ambiance of the Frederiksted waterfront frames the unbelievable colors of the sunset. The park offers several benches for concertgoers’ comfort, and they are encouraged to bring folding chairs, but the organization discourages bringing coolers with beverages and food. The free concert is supported in part by the cash bar and the vendors, and people are encouraged to support and thus ensure the continuation of this monthly event.
