Flash Flood Watch in Effect for St. Croix

Heavy rain across St. Croix has prompted a flash flood watch through Sunday evening, and the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency is urging motorists to use extreme caution on affected roads.

Downpours of one to three inches of rain an hour are possible and could lead to flooding in urban areas, streams and guts. According to the National Weather Service office in San Juan, a south-southeast flow will continue to draw abundant moisture into St. Croix overnight and Sunday while disturbances in the mid-upper atmosphere bring frequent showers and thunderstorms to the area over the next 24 hours.

VITEMA warned motorists against driving on roadways covered with water that may be deeper than it appears. Drivers should turn around and use an alternate route, as just one foot of water can sweep away a vehicle.

VITEMA advised residents to monitor weather reports for advisories, watches and warnings from the National Weather Service.
