Alleged Car Thief Arrested After Being Shot

Detectives from St. Croix’s Criminal Investigation Bureau Wednesday arrested 39-year-old Andy Lee Thornton, of no known address, when he was identified as the person who stole a vehicle April 5 from a business in Estate Little Princess.

Thornton was arrested at about 1 p.m. Wednesday and charged with unauthorized possession of a vehicle

The day after the vehicle was stolen, its owner, Wendell Whitcher, spotted it being driven in the Sunny Isles area and fired on it, shattering a side window. Witcher was arrested later that day and charged with reckless endangerment following that incident.

At about 1:30 a.m. the next day police saw a man covered in blood walking on North Shore Road. He was taken to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to his jaw and leg. Detectives later identified the man as Andy Lee Thornton, the person who allegedly stole Whitcher’s vehicle.

Detectives said the case is still open and additional charges may be filed soon. Thornton was placed on a $20,000 bail and remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
