Agriculture Announces Office Closures and Week of Activities

Farmers and the general public are advised that due to scheduled activities in celebration of National Agriculture Week, the St. Thomas offices of the Department of Agriculture (VIDOA) will be closed on Tuesday, March 15. In addition, the St. John office will be closed on Wednesday, March 16, while the main office on St. Croix will be closed for sales and services on Thursday, March 17, according to a press release on Monday from Commissioner of Agriculture Louis E. Petersen, Jr. Ph.D. These closures are necessary to facilitate National Agriculture Week festivities on each island.
VIDOA, in partnership with the Office of the Governor, farmers, the Department of Tourism, and the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, reminds the general public to join in the celebration of National Agriculture Week from March 14 – 18. The theme for this year’s observance is “VI Agriculture: Your Food – Your Farmer.”
In celebration of the week, market days will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at the Sanderill Thomas Bungalow in the Rothschild Francis Square in downtown St. Thomas, and on Wednesday, March 16, at the National Park Ball field in downtown Cruz Bay, St. John. On Thursday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., an Open House Program will be held at the Rudolph Schulterbrandt Agriculture Complex on St. Croix.
The market day and open house activities will feature the sale of fresh produce, value added products as well as grafting, beekeeping and box garden demonstrations. The Open House Program will also offer displays and presentations by the VIDOA divisions, including hay baling and land preparation. Presentations by staff of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service will focus on container gardening, farm safety and small livestock security.
For further information, the DOA can be contacted at 774-5182 (St. Thomas); 778-0991 (St. Croix); or 776-6274 (St. John).
