DPNR Hosts Workshops on Disaster Recovery for Archives and Libraries

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), with funding from a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), has announced workshops on “Disaster Recovery for Archives and Libraries” to be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, at the University of the Virgin Islands campus on St. Thomas, and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Curriculum Center on St. Croix.
Principles of emergency and disaster management, basic techniques for handling water-damaged collections and salvaging techniques are some of the workshop topics to be covered. Participants will also have the opportunity to work hands-on with wet and damaged materials including, but not limited to, documents, books, paper-based files, photographs, negatives, videotapes and other magnetic media, CDs and microfilm.
The workshops are being offered free of charge and lunch will be provided. All Virgin Islands archivists, librarians, records managers and collections caregivers should plan to attend, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
