Education Celebrates Black History Month Through Cultural Education

Gerard Emanuel, assistant director for the V.I. Department of Education’s Cultural Education Division has announced the department’s participation in the 2011 observance of Black History Month with activities targeted to educate and inspire students and the community. Scheduled activities include:
Friday, Feb. 4from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Charles Emanuel Elementary School
Cultural Education Presentation, a feature of the St. Croix District’s Professional Development Workshop focused on incorporating Virgin Islands culture into the special subjects curricula – i.e., art, music, physical education and health, provided to teachers and other education personnel by cultural education staff.
Friday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
Ivanna Eudora Kean High School
Black History Month Program – Annual Recognition of Successful Virgin Islanders, which highlights the life and achievements of Ambassador Terence Todman.
Friday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m.
Charlotte Amalie High School
Black History Month Program – Annual Recognition of Successful Virgin Islanders, highlighting the life of Ambassador Terence Todman. Students will participate in competitive docu-dramas.
Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
McAlpin Hall, Holy Cross Church Compound, Christiansted
Panel Discussion: An experience of enculturation of religious factions on St. Croix to become more aware to update themselves and become better agents of change in their ministries. The presentation will be facilitated by cultural education staff.
Monday, Feb. 28 at 12:45 p.m.
Arthur A. Richards, Jr. High School
Black History Month School Assembly:“The Importance of Self-Awareness” facilitated by a cultural education staff.
Emanuel has also reminded territorial junior high/middle school and high school students about the monthly essay contests. For the month of February, the St. Thomas-St. John District person will be Edward Wilmot Blyden; and on St. Croix, Ansetta DeChabert. For additional details and deadlines, contact the respective school administrators.
