CCT presents “Cabaret,” the Tony award-winning musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, for four weekends in February. Evening performances will take place at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 4-5, 11-12, 18-19 and 25-26. There will also be a matinée performance at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20.
“Cabaret”is set in Weimar-era Berlin in the early 1930s just as the Nazi Party is rising to power. The storyline focuses on nightlife at the infamously risqué Kit Kat Klub and on the relationship between the alluring English burlesque performer Sally Bowles and American writer Clifford Bradshaw. It is a time and a place where debauchery and hedonism are the rule of the land, where one happily forgets one’s troubles against a backdrop prescient of an impending collapse, of a world seemingly coming to its end. Innovative choreography and puppetry heighten the dramatic aspects of the story and add to the stunning visual spectacle.
The musical is directed by Ruby Des Jardins with music direction by Patrick Baron, and choreography by Khnuma Simmonds and Kemit Amon-Lewis. Mike Oleon contributes wondrous puppets and scenic projections. The cast includes Daniel Deane, Mariah Shabazz, Charles Braslow, Marilyn Chakroff and Patrick O’Laughlin, together with a talented ensemble of actors, singers, dancers and musicians. In addition to the title tune, Cabaret features memorable songs such as “Two Ladies,” “I Don’t Care Much,” “Mein Herr,” and “Maybe This Time.”
All performances will be held at the Caribbean Community Theatre, No. 18 Estate Orange Grove in Christiansted, St. Croix. Tickets will be sold in advance each Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-4 p.m. Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, $20 for college students (with a valid student ID) and $15 for children under age 18.
