Dr. Karl S. Wright Appointed UVI’s Provost Dr. Karl S. Wright has been appointed provost of the University of the Virgin Islands, effective July 15. As provost, he is responsible for administering academic policy at the University. Dr. Wright comes to UVI with more than 20 years of senior and executive level administrative experience at private and public universities. His higher education administrative experience began in 1985 when he served as chair of the Department of Economics at South Carolina State University. In 1987 he assumed the position of dean of the School of Business at the same university. Seven years later, Dr. Wright was named vice president for academic affairs at Florida Memorial University (FMU). He also served as executive vice president and provost at Florida Memorial University until 2006, when he was selected to serve as president of that institution.

UVI Appoints Bettina Miller as Director of Human Resources Bettina Miller has been appointed director of Human Resources and Organizational Development at the University of the Virgin Islands, effective July 6. She will have oversight responsibility for the university’s Human Resources Department – spearheading strategic and tactical implementation of leading edge organizational development and human resources initiatives. Miller will lead the development and delivery of core HR functions, including selection and retention, performance and succession management, and the development of HR policies, processes and procedures.
UVI Today… Photo Blog Features Prof. Kimarie Engerman The UVI Today photo blog continues its focus on the summer activities of members of the UVI community. The latest posting features Dr. Kimarie Engerman, an assistant professor of psychology at UVI, who recently completed a Leadership Development Institute program offered by the Quality Education for Minorities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program. The blog features the activities of UVI peer educators, student scientists and alumni. The photo blog is available from a link on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu .
Reichhold to Unveil 2010-2011 Season with Launch Party on Aug. 19
UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts will launch its 2010-2011 season with a party at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the center on the university’s St. Thomas campus. The public is encouraged to come out and see what entertainment – reggae, jazz, world music, R&B, dance and more – is in store at St. Thomas’ premiere venue for quality entertainment. Along with the launch party, the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce will conduct a “Business After Hours” event. Included will be a free buffet and music by Spectrum Band. VI Autism Network Kite Flying Jam Set Aug. 15 on St. Croix Campus UVI’s St. Croix campus will host the VI Autism Network’s second annual Kite Flying Back to School Jam from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15. Free kites will be provided to students. Music will be provided by DJ Mav. The Autism Network is joined by the UVI Buc Volunteers in presenting the activity. UVI’s Libraries Operating on Intersession Schedule The University of the Virgin Islands libraries are operating on an intersession schedule from July 30 through Aug. 22. During this period, UVI’s libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. They will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular library hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 23.
UVI’s Information Technology Services has also announced that all student computer labs will be closed for maintenance during the intersession. More information is available from the UVI HelpDesk via e-mail at helpdesk@uvi.edu or call 693-1466.
CES ‘From the Ground Up’ Newsletter Now Available Online The latest edition of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service (CES) “From the Ground Up” has been published and is available from the Publications link in the CES section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu – and from this direct link. The 16-page newsletter includes a wide-ranging review of recent CES activities. It also features a look at the CES 4-H program’s winning Carnival Children’s Parade Troupe and a report on CES Associate Director Kofi Boateng’s recent trip to Jordan where Boateng conducted health and nutrition workshops for 300 sheep farmers and 35 extension agents.
The newsletter covered tart-making demonstrations, the initiation of a four-year wastewater treatment licensing program, the restoration of St. Croix’s Adventure Gut, and participation by the CES and Agricultural Experiment Station in the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. There are also articles on Mango Melee and the recent meeting of agriculture commissioners from southern states held on St. Croix. CES State Director Kwame Garcia Sr., said the newsletter clearly portrays the multifaceted components of the CES. HIV/AIDS Peer Educators, Summer Scientists Featured in UVI Today… Photo Blog The UVI Today… photo blog continues its focus on the summer activities of students. The latest entry features a look at four of UVI HIV/AIDS Peer Educators – Adrienne Anthony, Derron Ambrose, Naji Shadeed and Alyssa Ryan – who attended the recent Minority Education Institution Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention Training session held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. This was the fifth year that UVI students participated in this training. Also featured on UVI Today… are photos from the more than 20 students who presented the results of recent research projects at the Eighth Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium on the St. Croix campus on Friday, July 30.

UVI Fall Semester Orientation Slated for Aug. 15-20 on Both Campuses Orientation and registration for new and transfer students attending the University of the Virgin Islands will be held from Aug. 15-20, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. All newly matriculated students are required to participate in orientation. The orientation process is designed to enhance students’ academic and social adjustment to college life. UVI’s Fall Semester Classes Set to Begin Aug. 23 on Both Campuses Returning Students: registration – online or in person – for returning students is available now through Monday, Aug. 9. Students must confer with advisors to receive information on their academic plans and to obtain PIN numbers needed for registration.
New and Transfer Students: Orientation activities are slated for Aug. 15-20. Advisement and registration for new and transfer students takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 18.
Late Registration: Advisement and late registration are set for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 19-20. A late fee of $75 will be charged. For details, call 693-1160 on St. Thomas or 692-4158 on St. Croix.
UVI’s 2010-2011 Catalog Available on Web Site The 2010-2011 University of the Virgin Islands Catalog is now available in electronic format (PDF) on the UVI Website. The new catalog consists of 216 pages and reflects the renaming from of the University’s academic units as colleges and schools. It can be accessed from the Spotlight button on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu .
Student Affairs Synergy Newsletter for St. Croix Campus Posted Online The August/September issue of Student Affairs Synergy, a newsletter published by the Division of Student Affairs on the St. Croix campus, has been posted to the UVI Web site. Along with general information, the newsletter features a welcome to fall semester students, a calendar, a student gallery and tips for student success. The newsletter is available from the St. Croix Student Affairs section (Current Students/Activities) of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu.
New UVI Faculty Orientation Scheduled Aug. 19-20 on St. Thomas Campus UVI’s Office of the Provost has announced dates for the University’s New Faculty Orientation and the 2010 Fall Semester Faculty Convocation. The New Faculty Orientation is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 20. The orientation sessions will take place at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
UVI’s Fall Semester Faculty Convocation Slated for Aug. 20 Videoconference Editors Note: Session time changed from earlier item. The Fall Semester Faculty Convocation is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. (Note: The convocation was originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m.) The convocation will be videoconferenced between the campuses with access available in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas.
