ARRA Funding Coming to VIRC&D
These funds will be used for a Watershed Stabilization project. This project hopes to reduce sediment loading to coral reef habitats by implementing a variety of watershed management and stabilization techniques on St. John and St. Croix. It will improve roads and restore riparian habitats, improving the watershed drainage across about 700 acres and reducing the sediment load washing into near shore habitats by approximately 130 tons a year, install road drainage improvements and vegetation of unpaved road areas. The creation of a sedimentation basin Battery Gut and bridge repair will also be completed. At the competition of this project the goal is to have 465 feet of road surface stabilization completed along with adjacent paved ditches and reduction of sediment loads by 29 tons per year in Fish Bay.
