18-Year Old Killed; 13-Year-old Brother Charged

An 18-year-old girl was found stabbed to death Sunday, and her 13-year-old brother has been arrested and charged with the crime.

At about 2 p.m. Sunday police on St. Thomas were notified of a possible stabbing at a residence in Nordsidevej, Fireburn Hill. Upon arrival officers discovered a young black woman who had been stabbed at least one time to the upper left side of her body. She was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center via ambulance. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

According to police the victim, 18-year-old Tamiell Griffiths of St. Thomas, was stabbed by her 13-year-old brother, allegedly over a family dispute.

It was the 46th homicide in the territory since the first day of the year, the 26th on St. Thomas.

The minor, along with his mother, were transported to Richard Callwood Command where he was advised of his rights and was processed. He was charged with murder and is being held in protective custody until his appearance before a judge on Monday. The investigation is ongoing.

“We have noticed an increase in domestic violence cases in this district, some leading to death," said St. Thomas/St. John District Police Chief Rodney F. Querrard Sr. "Responding to situations such as this is never easy. We should never have to be responding to anything involving family members, especially where the people involved are so young. Families should always find a way to work things out, no matter what the situation is. It should never come to this, never. All of my officers who responded to this situation are devastated. If you are ever involved in a family dispute or a matter of difference of opinion, work things out! Seek counseling! Call 911! Never leave a situation such as this turn to this level of violence. There are never winners in violence, only further breakdown and separation.”
