Nadir Shooting Victim Dies

A 21-year-old man died at 10:12 p.m. Monday at Schneider Regional Medical Center after a noontime shooting in Estate Nadir.

It was the 25th homicide on St. Thomas since the beginning of the year, the 45th in the territory in that time.

The victim was brought by private vehicle Monday to the Schneider Regional Medical Center in grave condition with a gunshot wound to the back of his head, according to hospital spokesman Sam Topp.

Police have taken one person of interest into custody and are searching for others, according to police spokesperson Melody Rames.

The investigation is ongoing and Rames said she expects that she will have more details Tuesday.

The shooting took place at 12:07 p.m. in the first block off the Bovoni Road, across the street from a popular lunch wagon, according to Virgin Islands Police Deputy Chief Wayne DeGraff.

In a telephone interview Rames was unable to confirm the number of shots fired or whether the incident happened on private property or in the street.

DeGraff was not able to offer further details of the shooting as VIPD officers developed their investigation, canvassed the neighborhood, and otherwise conducting their investigation.

Police directed traffic through in the area for more than an hour after the shooting, as drivers slowed to observe the numerous police vehicles and uniformed officers in the area.
