Gary Ray to Speak at IGBA Seminar

The Island Green Building Association (IGBA) will have its monthly meeting on St. John on Tuesday, April 27, at the Marketplace, 3rd floor, with social at 5 p.m. followed by a meeting from 5:30-6:30 p.m. (food and drink available). Gary Ray, Ph.D., of the University of the Virgin Islands and Virgin Forest Nursery, will discuss serious threats to local natural communities via importation of plant pests from the international nursery trade.

By providing native ornamental plants locally, he intends to provide a vital source for native species (many plants native regionally are imported with pests attached) for the V.I. landscaping industry. Ray will discuss his ideas on closing the energy loop with plant propagation by combining solar power, air and surface water collection, and composting to provide both plant media and nutrients. Come learn about protecting the indigenous natural heritage of our Virgin Island’s plants. The public is welcome to this free seminar. IGBA reaches out to show people how to live and build sustainably on St. John.
