Better Dads V.I. and Community Action Radio Offer Workshops on Raising Children

Better Dads V.I. in conjunction with “The People’s Community Action Radio (CAR)” will host fathering skills workshops featuring author and speaker Rick Johnson, founder of “Better Dads.” A series of workshops on radio within the correctional facilities and in the community at large will be held on the islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas from March 22-27.

Rick Johnson is an entrepreneur, having operated his own firm specializing in environmental engineering for 16 years. He has a bachelor of arts from George Fox University and a Masters in Education from Concordia University. A U.S. Navy veteran, he has also served on various community and business association boards, while finding the time to coach high school basketball. Featured in many online and conventional publications, such as New Man Magazine, Men of Integrity and Christianity.com, Johnson is a prolific author and speaker. He has appeared on over 200 radio and television shows throughout the U.S. and Canada. He and his wife, Suzanne L. Johnson, have raised two children to adulthood and currently make their home in Gresham, Oregon. Founded by Johnson in 2001, Better Dads is a fathering skills program designed to inspire and equip men to be more engaged in their children’s lives. During her children’s younger years, Mrs. Johnson was a full-time mom. She now acts as a corporate officer and advisory board member for Better Dads, and is an instructor to special needs children as well as an accomplished speaker in her own right.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will be in the territory for a week of workshops and presentations to include a unique seminar for all women who interact with boys, “Courageous Moms: Raising Boys to Become Good Men,” will feature the topics “The Effects of Fatherlessness on Boys,” “Why are Boys so Different,” “Communicating with Boys” and “Pitfalls – What to Avoid.” Most workshops will be conducted on radio with call-in participation from the community. These live, two-hour long “radio workshop” discussions will ensure greater participation and information sharing. Three workshops are planned for St. Croix and St. Thomas, to include a presentation to fathers and sons of both islands’ penal institutions, with a combined early evening workshop planned for St. John. The goal and objective of the “Father/Son Bureau of Corrections Workshop” is to help the men begin individual healing through forgiveness. Inmates will have an opportunity to invite their sons or fathers to the workshops. Men from the community at large will be able to volunteer alongside established men’s groups to act as liaisons and mediators for each father/son team before, during and after the workshops.
Men’s groups, churches, mentors and interested individuals are invited to call or e-mail to participate in this community-building series of activities. The complete schedule of activities is slated for release in early March 2010.
