Animal Welfare Center Presents 2010 Fur Ball, An Evening in Casablanca

The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) invites all Crucians to Casablanca, Morocco, the setting for the 10th Anniversary Fur Ball. The event will take place from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at The Palms Pelican Cove. This is AWC’s premiere. The Palms Pelican Cove will be transformed into a Moroccan landscape.

Fat cat and top dog ticket holders will be seated in the Sultan’s tent—which has already sold out—and will be treated to a special preview of live auction and silent auction items. Sultans and general ticket holders alike will be entertained by local belly dancer Khanuma and special guest belly dancers, the Arabian Fantasy of Puerto Rico. Hubbly Bubbly of St. Thomas will be on hand to educate guests about the traditional Middle Eastern water pipe, the hookah, and guests can sample flavored tobaccos as well as cigars from Steele’s Smokes and Sweets for $5.
Patrick Barron and friends will provide music befitting the theme and one might be visited by the spirit of Humphrey Bogart during the evening. Diageo will provide a martini bar serving specialty martinis, and V.I. Italian Trading has selected vintages for the event’s wine bar. Students enrolled in Good to Chew, the culinary program at Central High School’s vocational complex, will prepare and serve Moroccan inspired tapas for guests.
Merchandise from St. Croix and beyond is available to guests shopping the silent auction bazaar. AWC has even contracted the assistance of a genie to manage the live auction, which features trips, art and special wishes of the AWC staff for their pets. The 2009 Fur Ball raised money for new kennel doors for adult dogs with placards of donor names posted on the doors. In 2010 the AWC staff hopes that Fur Ball attendees will help rescreen and repair the puppy and cat area, home to 80 pets. AWC will also auction off medic kits in support of shelter outreach to the neighborhoods on island that in 2009 surrendered the most animals.
“The 2010 Fur Ball promises to be an evening of fabulous entertainment for guests, but more importantly an opportunity for the center to raise awareness of our work in the community, our goals for the future and our financial needs to provide care and housing for the abused, neglected and abandoned pets on St. Croix,” said shelter coordinator Gretchen Sherrill.
The Fur Ball is sponsored by The Lyle Foundation, Hovensa, Diageo USVI, Plaza Extra, TX Direct, A Better Copy, Channel 8 and Broadband VI.
