V.I . Humanities Council Announces New Cultural Diversity Grants

The Virgin Islands Humanities Council has announced a deadline of March 1 to apply for a new offering of cultural diversity grants available to non-profit organizations. Applications examining the theme “Building Community, Celebrating Diversity”will take preference above all others during the council’s regular January and March grant cycles.A total of $18,000 will be awarded. Mini-grants up to $3,500 and major grants up to $7,500 are due March 1. Mini-grant projects must be completed by May 2010.

VIHC is launching this initiative to provide a forum for dialogue amongst their diverse population on how disciplines within the humanities and social sciences can help to unify and rebuild society, foster extended inter-group engagement, and facilitate cultural exchange and common understanding among the people of the territory. It is funded through a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Eligible applicants include civic groups, school boards, PTAs, teacher associations, service clubs, libraries, museums, historical societies, church groups, professional organizations, labor unions, public television and radio stations, divisions of the university, and agencies of state and local government. Areas including history, philosophy, languages, literature, cultural anthropology, folk-life studies, comparative religion, ethics, archaeology, jurisprudence, and the history and criticism of the arts will be considered.
