In observance of Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the Division of Student Affairs at the University of the Virgin Islands has invited Dr. Sir Prince Ramsey, a family physician in private practice in Antigua, to make a presentation on the topic “HIV/AIDS in Caribbean Women and Their Offspring.” Dr. Ramsey will speak from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus.
Ramsey has taken his personal and professional messages on HIV/AIDS to over 20 Caribbean countries and the United States. He is considered to be one of the region’s foremost experts on HIV/AIDS and has been referred to as the “father of all AIDS fighters.”
He has lectured for over 25 years on this critical medical and social issue in every school and almost every church in Antigua/Barbuda. In addition, Ramsey has also appeared on television and radio over 100 times, and has written numerous magazines and newspaper articles on the topic. For the past 30 years, he has lectured to student nurses and midwives, and has served as volunteer medical officer, lecturer and examiner for the Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance Society.
The physician has been listed by the American Biographical Institute in the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership. The AIDS Secretariat honored him on World AIDS Day in December 2009, and he received the Governor General’s Award for his contribution to combating HIV/AIDS in Antigua/Barbuda.
Members of the university community as well as the general public are invited to attend this event. The presentation is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, through the Minority Education Institution Initiative. It is sponsored by UVI’s Substance Abuse, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Prevention Program in the Office of the Associate Campus Administrator for Student Affairs.
