Elections Board to Unveil New "E-Polling" Books at V.I. Ag Fest

Supervisor of Elections John Abramson Jr. demonstrates one of the new "e-polling" books. At the upcoming V.I. Agriculture Festival on St. Croix, voters will get a look at the new "e-poll" computerized polling books they will be using in this fall’s elections, the St. Croix District Board of Elections revealed at a special meeting Tuesday.
Instead of checking their name in the familiar massive poll books, voters will sign their names onto a tablet, and poll workers will check them off from a list displayed on a computer screen, elections officials said.
As previously, once checked off the poll book, voters will then go to one of several voting machines and vote anonymously. The signature will be stored along with the voter’s records, making it easier to tabulate and check who has and has not voted yet. According to voting officials, keeping and disseminating accurate statistics will be much easier.
Supervisor of Elections John Abramson Jr. unveiled one of the new systems at Tuesday’s meeting, which was called to plan for the Elections Office display at the annual Ag Fest. Each unit consists of a mouse, a keyboard, monitor, signature pad and a case.
The signature pad is similar to what shoppers use for credit card transactions at retail stores. While happy to upgrade the system, it turns out the Elections Office actually had little choice in the matter. The company that makes the traditional huge binders for thick paper printouts stopped making replacement parts, Abramson said.
As every year, there will be several voting booths with demonstration ballots where voters can pick their favorite festival foods while familiarizing themselves with how to work the machines. And the Elections Board booth will be offering voter registration all weekend, so any residents who have trouble registering to vote during the workweek can take care of their civic responsibility while browsing at the festival. This year, the festival will be Feb. 13-15 at the Agriculture Department grounds on St. Croix.
In other elections office news, a meeting of the V.I. Joint Boards of Elections is scheduled for Feb. 4 at the St. Croix elections office in Sunny Isles Shopping Center.
