@ Work – Marti Gotts, Vacation St. Croix

Marti GottsMarti Gotts gives people an option for vacation accommodations, something other than hotel rooms on St. Croix. She owns and operates Vacation St. Croix – a villa management and maintenance company she started 15 years ago.

“Villa people are a whole different sort of people,” Gotts says. “They are more traveled and savvy.” She says once they find villas they stick with it.

Gotts oversees about 50 villas of from two to six bedrooms. The villas are spread over St. Croix from Cane Bay to the east end. It is a licensed, insured and bonded vacation rental/property company. Before she started her company she worked five years for others managing villas on St. Croix.

In the beginning she worked out of her home doing everything except maintenance and housekeeping. That included picking up guests at the airport, provisioning the house and making reservations. Now she has 15 people working with her and carrying out those duties.

These days Gotts deals with potential guests, either by phone or e-mail, answering all their questions about St Croix and helping them select the villa best suited for their vacation. Her other chores are corresponding with villa owners to go over repairs and renovations for their homes. Vacation St. Croix has a licensed contractor on staff so it can oversee everything from painting to additions, roofs and decks.

Gotts has dealt with medical emergencies – cuts, sickness, forgotten prescription drugs, tooth aches and dehydration. She has managed surprise wedding proposals, elopements, weddings, and special parties. Gotts works with two wedding planners who can stage receptions for as many as 40 people at some villas. Gotts added she had one guest die while here. She has even picked up remains that were scattered on St Croix.

When she was asked what she enjoyed most about her job, she replied, “ Mainly my employees, they are all wonderful and have become my family.” Marti also enjoys her customers and seeing returning clients each year.

She says she is optimistic about the current tourist season on St. Croix. She added it is picking up.

“I think things are better than last year,” Gotts says. “People are spending this year unlike last year.”

She and her husband, Carl Gotts, have been active in the community, playing major parts in the CASA and Toys for Tots campaign. Marti has also been involved in St Croix Animal Welfare Center and Caribbean Community Theater fundraisers.

“We came for the weather and stayed for the opportunities,” Gotts says. “St. Croix has always been a place of opportunity for both business and personal growth.”
