Brief: Michael McDonald Promoted to VING Colonel

The ballroom of St. Croix’s historic Government House was the scene of pomp and ceremony Tuesday morning as Lt. Col. Michael McDonald was promoted to Colonel. McDonald, the V.I. National Guard’s new U.S. Property and Fiscal Officer, replaces retired Col. Marion Peterson in that position.
Born in 1954 to proud V.I. parents Sylvester and Eirene McDonald, McDonald spent his formative years on St. Thomas attending Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School until 1970 when he departed to Miami Military Academy, where he graduated.
He enlisted in the V.I. Army National Guard in 1983, graduated from the Military Police
One Unit Station Training and was assigned to the 662nd Military Police Company on St. Thomas.
In 1985 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Military Police Corps and assigned as a platoon leader of the 662nd Military Police Company.
During McDonald’s career, he has taken an array of military courses and had extensive police, command, arms and service training. He is currently enrolled in the Department of Distance
Education, U.S. Army War College.
McDonald holds a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Miami (Fla.) and a master’s in industrial psychology from Springfield College, in Springfield Mass.
While in the guard, McDonald has held many military assignments at home and abroad, including Battalion Commander, 786th Quartermaster Battalion and Battalion Commander/Mayor
for Forward Operating Base Taji, Iraq, 786th Quartermaster Battalion.
His awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, The Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and many others. He is married to the former Lisa Smith of St. Thomas. They have three sons and one daughter: Michael II, Mikel, Mykah, and Janave’.
