Special Education Audio Conference Provides Requirements for Transition Services

District audio conferences on the topic of “Transition Services in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP): Requirements for Post-Secondary Planning” have been scheduled by the Virgin Islands Special Education Department. Attorney Jim Walsh will make a presentation from noon to 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the respective conference rooms of the St. Thomas and St. Croix State Offices of Special Education, according to a press release from Education State Director for Special Education Carrie Johns.

The 90-minute interactive audio conference, hosted with the assistance of LRP Publication Conferences, will focus on the legal requirements for transition services in the IEP. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions about transition and post-secondary planning, with an emphasis on practical applications.
Jim Walsh is recognized as one of the top special education attorneys in the nation, and he will discuss:
  • What the IDEA regulation means by “a coordinated set of services designed to move special education students successfully from school to post-school settings”
  • The thin line between progress and a denial of FAPE
  • Vocational assessments as part of the IEP
  • The role of adult services organizations in the IEP process
  • Issues surrounding student participation in the IEP meeting
Director Johns encourages all special education stakeholders (to include: parents, special education directors, transition specialists, IEP leaders, school psychologists, general and special education teachers, principals, assistant principals and school attorneys) to attend this very important presentation. The St. Thomas Office is located at No. 210-3A Altona in the Frostco Building; the St. Croix Office is located at Estate Orange Grove, Bay 9 and 10, Building 2, Christiansted.
Persons interested in attending the conference are asked to contact Truvia Plaskett on St. Thomas at 776-5802 or Eddie Parrilla on St. Croix at 719-7682 prior to Sept. 30.
