New St. Thomas Boys & Girls Club Opens at Oswald Harris Court

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virgin Islands has announced the opening of a new St. Thomas Boys & Girls Club at the Oswald Harris Court Community Center. It will open its doors and begin offering traditional after school programming at the grand opening to be held on Monday, Sept. 14.

Parents are asked to register in person at the Oswald Harris Community Center from 2-6 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 10 and Friday, Sept. 11 or from 10 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Sept. 12. They are asked to bring a copy of their children’s immunization records and a $25 annual membership fee per child. Scholarships are available.
After school programming will be offered from 2:30-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, to children 6 to 18 years old. Traditional club activities will be offered such as the “Power Hour” homework tutoring, computer and technology training, arts and crafts, recreational games, health and wellness, drug and alcohol awareness, crime prevention and leadership development.
Since closing the doors of the St. Thomas club at Savan in December, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virgin Islands has developed a new leadership team and a new plan of action to better serve the St. Thomas community. It is because of a new partnership with V.I. Housing Authority (VIHA) that the club now has a new home at the Oswald Harris Court Community Center, which is well-suited site with ample classroom space, recreational areas, a computer lab, restrooms, an administrative office and a performance stage.
VIHA has selected the Oswald Harris Court community as their model community. The Boys & Girls Club will help build on VIHA’s design of a model community by providing a safe and positive place for children during the after school hours, as well as volunteer and employment opportunities for adults and seniors.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virgin Islands is a nonprofit organization and relies on funding from local and federal grants, corporate sponsorships, individual donations, fundraising events, and other income-generating revenue streams. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virgin Islands is in the middle of the 2009 Annual Campaign, “It Just Takes One.”
