Lost River Finds Winners Circle in Whose Yo Daddy Handicap

June 22, 2009 — Lost River collared the front-running Green Sand in mid-stretch Sunday during the first running of the Whose Yo Daddy Handicap at the Randall "Doc" James Racetrack before drawing away for a one-length victory at the wire.
With jockey Kevin Krigger in the irons, Lost River negotiated the 7.5-furlong distance in 1:31.1 to take home the lion's share of the $4,200 purse.
A good crowd showed up at the track on Sunday for the Fathers Day races and was treated to nine exciting races that featured some 57 thoroughbreds. With three supposedly heavy hitters making their debut on St. Croix, the track was abuzz with anticipation of the featured Whose Yo Daddy Handicap, and when it finally happened, the race was well worth the wait.
At the break, as expected, the front-running Green Sand, with jockey Angel Viera aboard, was quickest out of the gates and led the field by the grandstand for the first time. He would maintain his lead around the clubhouse turn, followed by Unbridled Legend and jockey Junior Inirio. Lost River was in third, followed by Soul Spirit and jockey Kerwin John, with the late-running Gallego bringing up the rear with Christian Soto in the irons.
The field would run down the backstretch in the same order until the four furlongs marker, when Lost River and Soul Spirit raced past a fast-tiring Unbridled Legend in pursuit of Green Sand. The pace really quickened at the three-eighths pole, as Gallego began his late run on the front runners. However, Green Sand was still looking strong out front and was, for the moment, keeping the challengers at bay.
As they reached the top of the stretch, Lost River was moving best of the horses chasing the leader, followed by Soul Spirit and Gallego, with Unbridled Legend now a distant last. He was able to collar Green Sand in mid-stretch, but the latter was not ready to give in just yet. A stretch battle ensued as they raced toward the wire. However, Lost River would not be denied, and as hard as Green Sand tried, he just could not keep the brown gelding from going by in the end. Green Sand was able to hold off Soul Spirit for second place. Gallego finished fourth, with Unbridled Legend bringing up the rear.
Another race of note was the seven-furlong sixth race for a purse of $3,800. In that race, Formally Cat with Soto aboard nipped Puerto Rican Emblem and jockey Elmo Barnes at the wire to record the fastest time of the day in winning the race in 1:24.3. He was 2/5 of a second off the track record. It was not easy, however, as Puerto Rican Emblem gave him all he could handle and was the one responsible for setting all of the fast early fractions. Charlie Cho of St. Thomas with Krigger aboard was third to close out the top three.
