June 20, 2009 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums in conjunction with the Friends of the Public Libraries will host territory-wide library summer reading programs.
The programs are based on three themes: Cultural Connection – children will learn about various cultures; Book-A-Trip Around the World – children will travel to many places around the world through a book; and Catch the Reading Bug! – children will be encouraged to build a love for reading.
Young readers interested in participating should visit their local public library and have a parent/guardian complete a registration form. During the summer, the participants will check out books to read and participate in activities such as story-time and scheduled performances. Workbook journals will be distributed filled with a recommended reading list for the particular age groups and a journal to record the books read during the summer.
The Florence Williams Public Libraries and the Athalie Petersen Public Library on St. Croix invite children in grades 1-8 to participate in the summer reading program from June 29 – Aug. 7. This year’s theme is Cultural Connection. Registration for the programs at both libraries begins on June 22 and ends on June 26. For more information, contact Linneth Mercado at 773-5715.
