Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico Choir to Perform on St. Thomas

The 31-member choir of the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico is on a 25th anniversary celebration Caribbean cruise. On Monday, June 15, it will be on St. Thomas. The choir, led by Evangeline Oliver, was started in 1983 and has performed in the United States, South America, Europe, Mexico, Trinidad, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Panama and the Far East. On this cruise they will visit and perform on their Caribbean neighbor islands of St. Thomas, Barbados and St. Kitts.
A free performance will be given and dedicated to cancer patients, survivors and their families at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, June 15, in the theater of the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Center. The community at large is also invited.
Playing their own instruments, the choir will perform songs from a variety of countries including songs in English and Spanish, such as “En Mi Viejo San Juan.”
Their musical selections will include Quechua pre-Columbian music; tangos from Argentina; music from México, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia; meringues from the Dominican Republic; habaneras from Cuba and Puerto Rican plenas and waltzes.
