League-Leading Vikings Beat Cobras 8-3 to Stay Atop Standings

June 1, 2009 — The defending champion Vikings got the best of the youthful but talented Cobras squad on Sunday in the Raphael Jackson AA Baseball league by a score of 8-3 at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
Juan V. Santana pitched five strong innings to pick up the win on the hill for the Vikings, while Cruz Soto got the loss for the Cobras.
Batting first, the Vikings got on the board right away on a three-run blast off the bat of center fielder Juan Santana to take the early lead. The Cobras had no answer in the bottom of the inning and V. Santana actually kept the Cobras off the board over the first three innings.
Meanwhile, the Vikings added another run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by David Clarke to extend their lead to 4-0.
After a scoreless third inning, the Cobras finally reached V. Santana for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after the Vikings failed to score in the top of the inning. They scored three runs on an RBI ground out by Jonathan Garcia, while two were unearned, to close to within one at 4-3.
The Vikings responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach, taking a five-run lead at 8-3. It turned out to be the final score of the game, as neither team would score the rest of the way. The Vikings scored their four runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Tony Cruz and Cantibol Encarnacion, and a two-run double off the bat of Dennis Brow.
Top batters for the Vikings were Santana, 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs; Cruz, 2 for 4 with one RBI; and Brow, 1 for 1 with a double and two RBIs. For the Cobras, Michael Fleming went 2 for 4 and Roberto Camacho went 1 for 2.
