May 31, 2009 — The Virgin Islands Culinary Team is sharpening knives and skills for the Taste of the Caribbean Competition June 12-14, and two team fundraisers are slated for Wednesday and June 9.
The first is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at Costa Java Cafe in Crown Bay beginning at 7 pm. Guests will sample two appetizers prepared by each of the chefs and three imaginative libations by the bartender. The cost for the event is $45 per person.
The second fundraiser will be held at the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort on St. Croix on Tuesday, June 9 at 7:00 pm. At this event, the chefs will prepare a three-course dinner, complemented by specially prepared drinks. Tickets are $65 per person.
The competition is sponsored by the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association and will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The 2009 team includes team manager chef Leslie Gumbs, Theos Personal Catering, St. Thomas; Brian Wisbauer, Salud Bistro St. Croix; Josh Vilain, Bacchaus, St. Croix; Dennis Vanterpool, Frenchmans Reef Marriott, St. Thomas; pastry chef Dennis Gribbin, Starfish Patisserie, St. Croix; and bartender Joshua King, The Ritz Carlton, St. Thomas. After a recent student cook-off, Afiyah Augustus of the St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center earned an apprentice spot on the team.
Sponsors include Costa Java Café, Divi Carina Bay, Frenchmans Reef Marriott, Merchants Market, Premier Wine & Spirits, Taste of St. Croix, The Ritz Carlton, the USVI Department of Tourism, and the West Indian Company Limited.
