Alert: Emails Scams Promise Easy Money

May 11, 2009 — Two new email scams have been reported circulating in the territory, according to an alert issued by the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA).
In one, an email is going around saying you have been randomly selected in a lottery drawing conducted by a law firm in Malaysia to receive money from the will of an attorney who has passed away. The scam requests that you contact the fictitious person immediately to start the process of transferring the money to your designated account.
The second scam claims to be from a William Achums, the fund manager of Fidelity Investment in the UK. He claims that he is looking for someone to trust who will stand as an investor to receive excess return capital funds as annual investment proceeds.
"Residents should not fall for offers that promise money without having to do anything," said acting DLCA Commissioner Wayne Biggs. "Always remember the saying that nothing in life is free, especially money from someone in the UK that you do not know. If an offer sounds too good to be true it usually is."
If you have received solicitation of any kind and may have questions about its legitimacy, or would like to file a complaint, please contact the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Division of Consumer Services, at 340-774-3130 on St. Thomas/ St. John or 340-773-2226 on St. Croix.
