May 6, 2009 – Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. proclaims the week of May 4-12 as Nurses Week in the United States Virgin Islands in celebration of nurses who strive to provide high quality patient care and improve our health care system.
There are nearly 2.9 million registered nurses in the United States and its territories, making it the nation's largest health care profession. Registered nurses in the V.I. are essential to the delivery of health care to the residents and visitors to the territory. The depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the different and emerging health needs of the population in a wide range of settings. Nurses' education and holistic focus promotes restoration and maintenance of health.
A renewed emphasis on primary and preventive health care will require the better utilization of all of our nursing resources. The cost-effective, quality health care service provided by our nurses will be an ever more important component of the health care delivery system in the future.
Gov. de Jongh calls upon the people of the Virgin Islands to join with him in acknowledging the nurses who care for us all and to support their efforts to improve our health care system.
