April 23, 2009 — Charges against 17-year-old Marcus Sampson were upgraded Wednesday from involuntary manslaughter to first-degree murder for the September 2008 shooting death of 41-year-old Malik Felix.
Sampson has been held at the Youth Rehabilitation Center on St. Croix since his initial arrest last October. He was re-arrested Wednesday by Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives, and will now be tried as an adult, according to Police Department press release.
Sampson's bail has been set at $1 million. He has been remanded to Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending an advice of rights hearing.
Felix died from multiple gunshot wounds September 11, 2008. Around the same time of the shooting, police were notified that Sampson — then 16-years-old — had turned up at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital with a non-fatal gunshot wound. At a press conference the next day, police announced that Sampson had been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter for Felix's murder.
