April 10, 2009 – Parents, students and department personnel are reminded of the scheduled upcoming make-up days. The make-up days are a combination of lost instructional time resulting from Hurricane Omar and the WAPA outages that took place during the first semester of school, according to a press release from the Department of Education.
Commissioner Dr. La Verne Terry said the make-up days will occur during the week of Virgin Islands Carnival. The dates are as follows:
Monday, April 27
· All public schools across the territory will be in full session.
Tuesday, April 28
· All public schools across the territory will be in full session.
Wednesday, April 29
· St. Thomas-St. John District public schools will be closed.
· Alfredo Andrews Charles H. Emanuel Elementary and John H. Woodson Junior High Schools will be in full sessions. All other public schools in the St. Croix District will be closed.
Thursday, April 30
· Only John H. Woodson Junior High School will be in full session. All other public schools in the St. Croix District and the St. Thomas-St. John District will be closed.
Friday, May 1
· Children's Parade Day. All public schools across the territory will be closed.
Dr. Terry urges parents to ensure that their children are in school on the outlined days. "All parents are encouraged to support the department's efforts to ensure that students receive the required number of instructional hours," she said. "There are approximately nine weeks left in the 2008-2009 school year, and the scheduled make-up days are important days as we endeavor to maximize the learning in the remaining weeks."
