UVI Hosting Music, Sports and More for Charter Month

March 4, 2009 — The University of the Virgin Islands is celebrating its 46th birthday with an official Charter Day Ceremony March 16 and Charter Month activities throughout March.
Activities ranging from dinner, dancing and music to arts and athletics will take place on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.
Charter Day is an annual celebration marking the March 16, 1962, signing of legislation chartering the College and later the University of the Virgin Islands.
Friday, March 6
4:30 – 7:30 p.m., St. Thomas campus, Dining Pavilion: UVI Carnival troupe will convene its first general meeting of members who will participate in the 2009 V.I. Carnival Adults Parade. Members of the UVI Carnival troupe will display the troupe's costume prototypes. "Early Bird" discounts apply to costumes paid in full on this day. Sunday, March 8
12 p.m., St. Thomas campus, golf course: 20th Anniversary of Afternoon on the Green, fundraising event showcasing the favorite dishes of the island's best cooks. Music will be provided by Top Notch band until 5 p.m., followed by jazz until 7 p.m. with UVI Jazz Ensemble. The Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers will also perform. Friday, March 13
6:30 a.m., St. Croix, from Sunshine Mall down the Queen Mary Highway to UVI campus: Queen Mary 5k Walk/Run.
4:30 p.m., St. Croix campus, Cafetorium: UVI Carnival troupe costumes will be showcased. For more information, contact Hedda Finch-Simpson at 692-4228.
Saturday, March 14
9 a.m., St. Croix campus, Great Hall: UVI Board of Trustees meeting, 9 a.m.
7 p.m., St. Thomas, Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort: UVI dinner/dance "Celebrating 40 Years of Nursing Education at CVI/UVI," commemorating the first nursing class to graduate from the College of the Virgin Islands, which later became UVI. Proceeds will benefit UVI Nursing Programs and the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. Tickets are $75. For more information, contact Pamela Toussaint at 693-1551.
8 p.m., St. Thomas, Reichhold Center for the Arts: "Dance Brazil" concert fuses traditional Afro-Brazilian movements of capoeria, candoble and samba with modern dance. Monday, March 16
9 a.m., St. Croix campus, Great Hall: Official Charter Day Ceremony
9 a.m., St. Thomas campus, Administration and Conference Center's First Floor Conference Room: Official Charter Day Ceremony includes steel pan ensemble, poetry reading, current student and alumni speakers including key note speakers Eian Tomlinson and Reginald Vigilants. Activities will be videoconferenced between campuses.

Friday, March 20
6 p.m.: St. Thomas Campus, Chase Auditorium (B110) and St. Croix campus via videoconference in room 401 in the Melvin Evans Center, the Alfred O. Health Distinguished Lecture Series will feature physician, humanitarian and global health expert Dr. David Walton.
