March 4, 2009 — There were three games contested Monday night in the Bob Owens Slow pitch softball league at the D.C. Canegata ball park, but the one most fans wanted to see was the second game between the Seaborne Stealers and Softball Inc. With both teams tied at the top of the league with one loss each, the winner of this contest would be in first place all alone with the playoffs looming.
The Stealers' lone blemish on their record came at the hand of Softball Inc., but they were not going to let that happen again on Monday as they blew a close game wide open with seven runs in the third and eight in the fourth on their way to a 17-12 victory. The never-say-die Softball Inc squad tried hard to get back into the game, but could not quite catch up.
It was the Stealers with 17 runs on 19 hits with two errors, while Softball Inc. finished with 12 runs on 16 hits and three errors. Sam Ramos got the win on the hill for the Stealers, while Cody St. Pierre got the loss. Top hitters for the Stealers were Owen Pimentel, 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Raymond, 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. For Softball Inc., Leandro Reyes went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Antonio Cruz went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Anchor Dive 13, Wyatt Heat 9
In game one, Anchor Dive pulled off a mild upset when they knocked off defending champions Wyatt Heat 13-9. it was Anchor Dive with 13 runs on 15 hits and four errors while the Heat had nine runs on 12 hit and three errors. The winning pitcher was Edwin SanKitts, and James Smith got the loss for the Heat. Top batters for Anchor Dive were Randy Rawlins, 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Danny Rosa, 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. For the Heat, Eric Perez and Spencer Hendrickson were both 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs each.
Hummers 27, Speak the Word 2
In Monday's nightcap, the National Guard Hummers took Speak the Word Ministries out behind the old wood shack and soundly thrashed them, 27-2. Hummers' ace, Jerry Vialet, was in total control in picking up the easy win as he limited a powerful Speak the Word Team to just four hits. Ian Lewis got the loss. The Hummers finished with 27 runs on 25 hits and three errors while Speak the Word scored two runs on four hits and two errors. Top batters for the Hummers were Colin Williams, 5 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, and Dennis Carter, 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. For Speak the Word, Kareem Dennis went 1 for 1 with a home run and one RBI.
