Humanities Council Accepting Nominations for Heath Award

March 3, 2009 – The Virgin Islands Humanities Council is now accepting nominations until March 13 for its annual Heath Award, which honors two certified grade K-12 public school teachers–one from the St. Thomas-St. John district and the other from the St. Croix district–who have exhibited outstanding ability and unfailing dedication to teaching the humanities.
Humanities disciplines include language and literature, history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, folklife studies, jurisprudence, philosophy, ethics, comparative religion, and the history and criticism of the arts. Each winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a commemorative certificate.
The award was established in 2003 through a generous donation from Dr. Alfred Heath and his wife, the late Geraldine Heath, a former teacher who held a passion for educating and empowering others.
For more information, call the Humanities Council at 776-4044 or visit www.vihumanities.org/schools.htm.
