Arnold Highfield Reads New Poems at Undercover Books

Feb. 11, 2009 – Arnold Highfield will read and discuss poems from his newly released book, "Under a Taino Moon," from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, at Undercover Books & Gifts in Gallows Bay. After his reading, he will meet customers for a book signing.
"Whether in musically haunting lyrics…or in narratives that engage language's possibilities…Arnold Highfield's verse vibrates with the energy of possession and reclamation…which enriches and finds nourishment in all others."–Marvin Williams, The Caribbean Writer.
In this collection of poetry, Highfield takes simple events in a life–an angle on a scene, words of a friend, the glance of a stranger, a bar of music, a half remembered dream–and writes beautiful, rhythmic lines of poetry. According to Highfield, each of these pieces can be seen as an eye or an ear, located above and behind a moment of conception. The poems in his new book took him about five years to write.
Highfield is professor emeritus of social sciences and linguistics on the St. Croix Campus of the University of Virgin Islands. He has published an earlier volume of verse, "An Archaeology of Names." In addition, he has published verse in a number of journals, including The Caribbean Writer, Ethos, The Lyricist, Kruispunt, Yellow Cedars Blooming and Seasoning for the Mortar, to name just a few.
