CFVI Announces Availability of Kimelman Grants for Early Childhood Education

Jan. 21, 2009 – On the 88th birthday of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands' founding donor Henry L. Kimelman, the foundation has announced the availability of the 2009 Kimelman Grants for Quality in Early Childhood Education.
The Kimelman Grants will provide a total of $25,000 in awards ranging from $250 to $2,500, for directors and/or teachers in the territory's licensed childcare centers. Proposals may request funding for supplies to improve the physical appearance of the center; books or developmentally appropriate toys; training and materials for parents, staff, etc. The criteria and application form invite maximum participation and room for creativity from applicants. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis for initiatives that seek to improve the quality of early childcare in the V.I.
The grants are an initiative of The Family Connection (TFC), which is the CFVI program to enhance the early childhood environment in the USVI. TFC has an ambitious agenda that includes strategies to strengthen the community childcare and early education infrastructure in the territory through professional training, teacher and parent education, child care center accreditation, and advocacy to improve public policies that affect the quality of child care, early literacy, family involvement and school readiness.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee, which will include parents and early childcare professionals. Priority will be given to proposals where the project description is clear and well organized, creative strategies and activities are used to improve the quality of early childhood education, outcomes are measurable and substantive, the budget is realistic and the funds will be used efficiently.
For more information about the Kimelman Grants, call TFC Center at 777-0990 to speak with Patricia Varlack; or contact CFVI at 774-6031 to get in touch with TFC Director Ellie Hirsh.
Applications are available on St. Thomas at the offices of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, Royal Dane Mall; or The Family Connection Center in Vitraco Mall; on St. Croix at the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce, 3009 Orange Grove, Suite 12. They can also be downloaded from CFVI's Web site at www.cfvi.net. To have an application mailed, call 774-6031. They will be considered and grants will be awarded on an on-going basis. The final date for submission of proposals is 5 p.m., Friday, May 29.
CFVI was established in 1990 with a $540,000 grant from Ambassador and Mrs. Henry. L. Kimelman. Today the endowment is $6 million and growing. CFVI manages 90 named funds, administers scholarships, grants and programs throughout the Virgin Islands and coordinates the establishment of memorial funds. The professional staff and board of directors have expert knowledge of USVI community needs and are prepared to help guide philanthropists in their giving so that their financial contribution has maximum impact while connecting them to the issues they care most about. In 2008, the Community Foundation provided $1.5 million in grants and services in the Territory.
